![]() ![]() Perhaps this is why the Division is represented by the Cleaners - they’re one of the few groups in the setting that aren’t also tech guys. DedSec, Phantoms, and Echelon are all tech guys. XDefiant is Tom Clancy’s Smash Bros., but it rarely does anything wild or funīut XDefiant also doesn’t measure up to the casts of other contemporary shooters. The Cleaners have Joe Ferro, their blue-collar boss with the Noo Yawk accent, announcing the matches for them. DedSec can unleash the Infiltrator Spiderbot on an enemy’s face, blocking their view and forcing them to cartoonishly flail and fumble. There are some fun tools and Easter eggs for each faction. ![]() This game might scratch an itch for those who feel Valorant is a little too slow, or for those who find the focus on Overwatch’s unique hero abilities to be overwhelming. Libertad, for instance, are great battlefield medics and healers, whereas the Cleaners excel at area control thanks to their liberal use of fire. Factions are the game’s character classes every player will spend plenty of hands-on time with a weapon, but with a faction they have access to additional powers and abilities. ![]() Once the game kicks off, players can liberally swap among the factions and different weapon loadouts. There are arena-style maps for XDefiant’s Domination and Occupy game modes, and then more linear paths for Zone Control and Escort. Players face off in 6v6 battles on maps both original to XDefiant and ones drawn from Ubisoft’s Far Cry and Tom Clancy games. But it lacks a certain je ne sais quoi the closest thing I can say to try and sum up the game’s identity is that it’s Tom Clancy’s Smash Bros. This is great for gameplay, because it’s easy to read both enemy movement and your own squad. The XDefiant preview available to press was much more visually restrained, with liberal use of tacticool style. Ubisoft previously described the game as partially a “punk-rock mosh pit,” with earlier materials being significantly more colorful. XDefiant is a free-to-play, fast-paced, competitive shooter that allows players to pick from one of five factions: the Libertad revolutionaries from Far Cry 6 ex-Ghost Recon specialists known as Phantoms agents from the Echelon spy agency DedSec street hackers and the Cleaners, former sanitation workers with a love of fire from the Division games. It’s a fun premise backed up by competent, crisp gameplay - but does the game manage to make these matchups memorable? Players can jump into a match as a Echelon spy straight out of Splinter Cell or use Watch Dogs hackers to confound their foes. Gunsmith customization has seven attachment slots: optics, barrel, grip, muzzle, front rail, magazine, and stock.Ubisoft’s XDefiant is an arena shooter with a familiar cast drawn from the publisher’s array of shooter and action-adventure franchises. It's a fairly standard arsenal of assault rifles, LMGs, sniper rifles, shotguns, and SMGs. Like Call of Duty, players can build custom loadouts and equip various attachments to guns. It's safe to assume later faction additions will too. DedSec, in particular, seems like it'll need to be unlocked through gameplay at launch. Worth noting: it doesn't seem like all of XDefiant's factions will be immediately available. DedSec (Watch Dogs): The hackers from Watch Dogs has gotten a lot more militant here, they've got a disruption-based ability kit, able to hack enemy deployables and disrupt enemy HUD/radar.Īccording to Ubisoft's XDefiant post-release roadmap, there will be more factions on the way after the game's 1.0 launch, releasing alongside its seasonal content drops. Here, they have a damage-focused ability kit, because they're still into starting fires. Cleaners (The Division): Those guys from the Division who were into starting fires.Echelon (Splinter Cell): These are support characters and colleagues of our man Sam Fisher who can evade enemy detection and reveal enemy locations. The Phantoms are ex-Ghost mercenaries with a Tank-like ability suite, with extra health and deployable shields. Phantoms (Ghost Recon): Apparently Ghost Recon is something you can defect from. They have a healing-focused toolkit, including a Passive ability that slowly heals nearby teammates with "the contagious spirit of freedom." Sure! Libertad (Far Cry): Freedom Fighters from Far Cry 6's Yara. Here are the Factions currently available in XDefiant: ![]() Ubisoft has said they'll be adding more factions with seasonal updates. Originally, the available factions were all from the Clancyverse, but Ubisoft has dropped the Tom Clancy branding to pull in factions from its other franchises. Your Faction choice is separate from your loadout, and can be swapped in-game like you can swap loadouts. XDefiant features Factions, which function like character classes by determining which passive, active, and Ultimate abilities you'll have available during play. ![]()
